Plate 06.27 Above. The famous Mont Saint-Michel sits just off the shore on the northern coast of Brittany, near Avranches. While moving past the area the author's father asked for a few hours off to visit it, but was told by his commander "Don't you know there's a war on?" The Germans respected the religious background of the structure, although it would have made a wonderful fortification had they chosen to garrison it.
